Fear sometimes comes to knock at our door

Fear
Sam could feel it, he could smell it, and it was always present now. He had known for some time the day would come but he had never expected it to come like this. He had been warned but he had ignored the warning signs and continued with his daily life as if it did not exist. image

He

could no longer ignore it, its very presents flooded the room and every thing he touched smelled of it. Surly he thought others had experienced it and had lived through it.
He began to think back to when he first noticed it, at first he had laughed at it, it could not be real. But slowly ever so slowly it had began to make its presents felt, until every thing he did was with it in mind.

How he wondered had he ever been so foolish as to think he would be able to deceive it? Oh well the only thing to do now was to face up to it and take it like a man he thought. But if only things had been different if only he had not been so foolish it would not have come to this.

Very slowly he moved across the room hoping that it would not notice a futile hope it was ever alert and every time he made a move he felt its eyes on him. Now his heart gave a leap as he thought he had detected a movement in its eyes, no it was just shifting its weight to a more comfortable position.

Sam thought he was like the man who had willingly drank a draft of poison and hoped and prayed it did not work, Others he knew had found a way to overcome it he was sure of this people had told him so. Now as he moved he began to gain a little of his old self confidence and he began to breath more easily surly this beast was not all knowing maybe just maybe there was a chance to outwit it. Out of the corner of his eye he saw the beast move forward cautiously and with careful steps almost if it was testing the floor for hidden traps. Sam stood still and hoped that if he did not move the thing would not see him. Once again the smell was there strong pungent people had said it had no smell well he thought they were wrong it was real and it had a very real and penetrating smell.

If only he had taken processions if only he had taken the time to cover his tracks more carefully maybe he would not be in the predicament he now found himself in. The ugly beast had now settled back on its haunches and had closed its eyes as if in contemplation of its next meal. Sam hoped and prayed that he would not be its next meal.

He thought of the many things he could have done to outwit the beast he had been given an opportunity yet he had refused to take that opportunity now the moment had passed. It all boiled down to the fact that he had hoped to outwit it with his own ingenuity. Lately the news reports had been full of what the beast had done and he had watched and the fear had begun to grow in him it was going to come after him at some stage. Now it sat in his bedroom and watched him large as life and very boldly as if it had been invited in.

When the end came he hoped he would be able to face it as bravely as others had, others had fought it right up to the end brazenly defiantly. He had seen on the news reports the results of this futile fight of the other victims and how it had ended.

He only hoped that he would make a better display of himself then some of its other more pitiful victims. Sam began moving again closer to the door if he could only get into the other room maybe he could lock the beast in this room and for a while at least have a chance of getting away getting help. He could not take the pungent smell of it as it sat on the carpet as he watched it; he saw that it appeared to it owned the room.

How he hated this uninvited and ugly guest, the question he now asked himself was how if he got into the other room would he be able to kill this beast which had been stalking him for some considerable time. Could he take a gun or a knife no he thought that was foolish that would only solve the problem for a short period of time?

The answer had to be some thing far more substantial; the answer he knew would come to him he just had to think he needed time to think dammed this ugly beast invading his space in the middle of the night. When it had first entered his room he had been asleep and it was only after some time that he had woken by the smelt the beast gave off, a terrible odor. This is what had woken him; he had slipped from his bed as quietly and as cautiously as possible he did not want to alert it to his movements after all he wanted to escape and live to fight another day. The beginnings of an idea began to grow in his head, now it became important that he reach the door with out disturbing his unwelcome guest. The sweat was running down his face and he lifted his hand and wiped it away with his sleeve.

Yes there was just a slight chance the plan might work but he knew if he wanted to survive he would have to at least try and carry out this bold and dareing plan.  If he did not try he would never know if the plan would of worked and what was it that people always said better to have tried and lost then never to have tried at all.

Sam saw the beast move again his heartbeat was now loud in his ears and he wondered if the beast could hear it he hoped not if it could then all was lost. Its smell was now stronger then ever and Sam believed this was because it was moving and the stink of its animal breath was strong how he hated it. Maybe I can use my hatred of it to advantage he thought and he turned his mind once more to the plan he had in mind. First he needed to reach the door as carefully as possible he began to move the last few steps towards the door. Now hope was alive and it began to fill his heart and some how it did not seem so large and ugly yes he hoped if the plan works then I will survive to tell my grand children of this night he thought. Sam took the last few steps to the door and put out his hand. Click went the light switch and light flooded the bedroom. Now he smiled he knew he had won it the thing he had feared was no longer there it had fled he poured himself a drink of water from the nightstand and thought fear of the unknown is the most terrible thing. After all he was no longer afraid and he had no reason to be as every thing in the room was in good order and he had got a fright from waking suddenly in a strange hotel room.
